I’m relatively new to the copywork scene even though I have been homeschooling for 15 years. After learning more about the merits of it, I decided to incorporate it more into our school work this year. You can click here to read more about the benefits of copywork, but the reasons that caught my eye were:
- Copywork can be used as a handwriting exercise. The kids are not practicing obscure sentences, but rather rich content of your choosing.
- Copywork can help increase vocabulary, grammar and spelling skills.
- Choosing quality content as copywork will allow your kids to see good composition form as well as well put together sentences.
So there you go, you can teach an old dog new tricks.
Scripture copywork
Also added to our schedule this year, is our involvement with Community Bible Study Part of our daily lessons to do at home is Scripture copywork. Every day, we write out the Bible verse we are to memorize for the week. I won’t lie. At first I may or may not have rolled my eyes a bit at having to repeat that activity daily. Bad attitude aside, it did not take long for me to realize the benefit of this activity. Writing it out every day helped me to memorize it more effectively.
I enjoyed writing the individual verses, but thought it would be even better if I could write longer sections. If every day I wrote one verse at a time, I could write out whole chapters or Psalms.
Hence my creation of this Scripture CopyWork free printable with the theme of “Giving Thanks.” The schedule covers 20 days instead of 30 or 31 days because I know life happens and you or your kids may not be able to get to it every day. For me, five days a week is a good pace. To be honest, I created this printable with you (and me) in mind, but you can certainly use it with your kiddos.
How to use it
Because there are no day of the week designations on the schedule, you can start whenever you’d like. I added check mark boxes in each square to help you keep track of where you are as you progress through the schedule. I would recommend using an inexpensive notebook that is designated for your Scripture copywork. If you’d rather use a pretty paper, I designed this accompanying page
When you are finished, you will have copied out, in their entirety, Psalms 100, 111, and 138. I choose these passages in particular because of their themes of giving thanks.
