Simple Bible Lessons on David

There are so many lessons that can be done on David. His life was a very full one and God certainly did much through him. To keep things simple, I just have two simple Bible lessons on David. One is on David and Goliath, the other is on David and Saul. If you have teens, I have included some resources you can use with them. As always, I only include printables that are free.

Simple Bible lessons on David and Goliath

As with all the simple Bible lessons, start by reading the story. You can find the text in 1 Samuel 17 or read it in a story Bible.

Videos

Watch the God’s Story video

The Beginners Bible version is much longer at 27 minutes.

In my opinion, the ultimate David and Goliath version is the VeggieTales story “Dave and the Giant Pickle.” It is a must see.

This video is really interesting. The host uses both a slingshot and a shepherd’s staff sling and compares the two. It’s impressive and gives an interesting perspective on which David may have used.

Okay, one more. During the pandemic shut down, my kids made a video for our kids at church. It’s pretty funny. One of my kids is behind the camera.

Papers and Projects

You can find preschool pages at truewaykids.com

DLTK-Bible.com had some fun pages for slightly older kids. Here you can find:

Make your own slingshot using paper, tape and a rubber band. We had a lot of fun with these.

Who wouldn’t want a cute lamb craft project?

LEGO challenge

Build a LEGO slingshot or a sheep. If you need some inspiration on building a sheep, you can watch a master builder create one.

Simple Bible Lessons on David and Saul

There are multiple passages discussing the relationship between David and Saul. You can find these in 1 Samuel 19, 20, 23, 24 and 26. There’s a lot of material there, so you might want to pick and choose what to cover.

In addition to looking at character qualities of David in these stories (humility, honor, loyalty, etc.) you can highlight the friendship that David and Jonathan had.

Videos

Here is the God’s Story video.

The Saddleback kids video is always a hit as well.

Papers and Projects

David waits to be King, at Truewaykids.com, addresses Saul’s jealousy and David’s friendship with Jonathan.

Children’s Ministry Deals has a fun King David Bingo game (you will need to enter your email address) to try.

For the older elementary crowd, Bible fun for kids has a whole series with printables on the life of David.

You can see examples of their printables here. You’ll find a crossword, maze, and fill in the blank map to chart David’s travels

Wordmint.com has a good selection of word searches, varying in the number of words to search.

I have a comic book template that you can use for any Bible story. You can find it in my free resource library. Just sign up at the end of the post to get the password.

LEGO challenge

The challenge is to either make a crown for King Saul, or a “free build.” A free build is an opportunity for your child to choose something from the story to create.

Super Simple Bible lesson on David for Teens

I lead a small homeschool high school group in my home. Right now we are going through a series on “Bible Heroes” using the Bible (of course) and videos by Allen Parr. He did a short series called “Heroes” which are short videos (about 10-15 minutes) highlighting certain characteristics of well-known Biblical people. There are two on David.

3 Essential Qualities You Must Have to Fulfill Your Purpose” is one that we just watched last week. I will warn you that we did skip over a short part (where he says “Storytime”). It is completely fine for adults, but I didn’t really want a group of co-ed teens listening to the poor advice a pastor gave Allen.

The other video for David is “Does God Still Love Me When I Turn Away From Him?

If you look over the playlist, you will see some surprising choices (like Judas). It’s not that all of these people are heroes. The focus is more on what life lessons can we learn from their lives. Please preview the videos before showing your teens. The videos can sometimes deal with some pretty adult matters, so I was selective about the ones I plan to use.

For some good discussion questions on David, I used portions of the youth study on David from eBiblestudy.org

These simple Bible lessons on David can be used at home or at church. Have fun with them!
